🎸 Watch as I take on the challenge to recreate the iconic BB King Lab Series L5 guitar tone using a Gibson Les Paul. This demonstration really highlights the subtle dynamics and soft phrasing that defined his electric guitar playing. Get ready for whisper-soft tones building to an energetic finale! In this video, I show you how I found the perfect combination to recreate that unique sound of the Lab Series L5, a very special amplifier because it’s a transistor amp, yet incredibly clear and intelligible. I set up my Les Paul to brighten the tone a bit, since it’s a solid body guitar, while B.B. King’s Lucille has a hollow body that makes it naturally brighter. 🎵 In the video, B.B. King starts playing with very low gain. His phrasing is soft but very distinctive and responsive, especially his vibrato. My guitar has a very similar Tone! Do you can distinguish it? I try to follow him closely, even when he almost seems to whisper the notes, as if there’s a sleeping baby next to him that he doesn’t want to wake. Listen to how my tone closely matches, if not perfectly replicates, the blues legend’s sound, even at such a low dynamic level. In the grand final, B.B. King raises the volume and gain to unleash his signature note: the tonic on the high E string, powerful and vibrant like a battle cry.
